Port Maitland Power Generation Station is a new venture by Lagasco supported by Vergent, seeking to upgrade an existing gas compression station with electricity generation capabilities. This project is located near Lake Erie in Lowbanks, in Haldimand County, Ont. Once constructed, this project upgrade will contribute 8MW of electricity to Ontario’s electricity grid.
The Port Maitland gas compression station at 315 Farr Rd, Lowbanks, Ont., has been in operation for over 40 years on private land. The site is owned and operated by Lagasco Inc., an Ontario-based and family-owned organization responsible for processing and selling available natural gas to retailers such as Enbridge and Epcor.
Responding to Ontario’s Growing Electricity Demand
Ontario is experiencing an accelerated period of electricity demand growth, driven by factors such as industrial expansion, energy-intensive data centres, population increases, and broader electrification efforts. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) projects that provincial electricity demand will grow by 75 percent by 2050.
To ensure grid reliability and prepare for these future needs, the IESO has launched the Long-Term 2 Request for Proposals (LT2 RFP). This program is designed to secure new electricity generation and capacity resources that will be in service in the 2030s and beyond.
Our proposed Haldimand Port Maitland Power Generation Project, a key initiative in this effort, will increase local electricity generation capacity and contribute to Ontario’s low-carbon energy future. The facility will utilize high-efficiency natural gas turbine technology to provide a flexible and reliable electricity supply. This technology offers a lower emissions impact than traditional large-scale gas turbines and serves as a vital complement to intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar, ensuring a stable grid when those sources are not producing power.
The project involves a strategic upgrade to our existing Port Maitland gas compression station, allowing us to generate power at the point of gas compression. This approach is more efficient and effective than competing technologies, as it eliminates the costs associated with buying and transporting gas from out of province and replaces them with locally produced natural gas from Lake Erie where the royalties and jobs are in Ontario and Haldimand county. By producing electricity locally for Southwestern Ontario, we will not only enhance regional energy resilience but also contribute to the economic prosperity of Haldimand County.
Engagement
Lagasco is committed to engaging with the community, municipality, and the public, as well as other interested stakeholders, throughout the LT2 process and beyond. We invite you to attend a public meeting to learn more about the proposed Port Maitland Power Generation project. Meeting materials will be available on this webpage following the meeting.

Understanding the Process
Lagasco is proposing the Port Maitland Power Generation project through the IESO LT2 procurement process. Proposals for projects in the ‘energy’ stream are due to the IESO in October 2025.
Lagasco will complete an environmental assessment and obtain the necessary permits and approvals prior to construction if awarded an LT2 contract by the IESO. Engagement with the community, the municipality and other interested parties will continue through the next phase of the project.
