BRMH is implementing a 260kW CHP system to enhance energy resilience, reduce costs, and boost sustainability by Fall 2025.
Overview
Enhancing Energy Resilience and Energy Efficiency
Black River Memorial Hospital (BRMH) is a 25-bed critical access hospital in rural Jackson County, Wisconsin, serving about 21,000 residents. Many patients rely on Medicaid and Medicare, which pressures BRMH’s financial margins. With limited control over payer reimbursement, BRMH focuses on improving efficiencies and maximizing every dollar, recognizing that every minute spent on administrative tasks is time away from patient care.
The Challenge BRMH needed a solution to manage rising energy costs, improve energy independence, and ensure uninterrupted, high-quality care amidst financial constraints and potential grid disturbances.
The Solution BRMH is installing a 260kW Microturbine Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. This system will generate on-site electricity and capture waste heat for hospital needs. This approach will reduce reliance on the grid, mitigate exposure to volatile utility rates, and improve overall energy efficiency. Critically, it will enhance energy resilience, allowing the hospital to maintain essential operations during power outages, and contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.
Anticipated Outcomes Commissioning in Fall 2025, the CHP system is expected to significantly reduce BRMH’s utility costs, freeing up funds for patient care. It will bolster the hospital’s operational stability with uninterrupted power, crucial for a critical access hospital. This project underscores BRMH’s commitment to environmental stewardship and long-term financial health for the Jackson County community.
